Rhone Intensive

Skill Level: Intermediate

Today, the three top red wine regions in France are Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhône Valley. The latter, though not as well-known as the two former, is where viticulture began in France. The Rhône is also the source of some of the most sought-after, intense, dynamic wines now coming out of Europe.

Through extensive tastings, you'll pursue both the northern and southern Rhône, and learn what makes each appellation and its wines unique. During The Rhône Intensive course you will also:
  • Explore the Rhône Valley's history from its beginnings as the first wine region in what is now France.

  • Learn about the unique geography and climate, including the miles of riverbed rock that form the unique soil of Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

  • Study the laws by which Rhône wines are governed.

  • Understand the enological and viticultural techniques employed in the region today, including the controversial use of stems in winemaking.

  • Examine the amazing range of grape varieties grown here from well-known varieties such as Syrah and Viognier to those lesser known such as Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Roussanne, Marsanne, and Clairette.

  • Examine the compatibility of these wines with food.
